Enercon increases its order from Bost to 8 multi-function vertical lathes

Last modified 29-01-2010

The Guipúzcoa-based Bost Machine Tools Company has consolidated its innovation strategy for large machine construction by securing contracts for its new Bost VTL 53 C multi-process vertical lathe and its second generation of Bostram 160 HS boring machines. Both machine types are for working with large parts.

The Bost Machine Tools Company’s order portfolio has been expanded with two new contracts of great strategic importance. The commissions received from the German wind turbine manufacturers Enercon and the Guipúzcoa company Cadinox, which specialises in stainless steel metal-forming, are worth over seven million euros, but they also represent the definitive approval of the technical improvements and innovations included on their new generations of large machine tools, as the company affirms. The objective of these families of equipment is to ensure rigidity and high precision.

Bost’s management particularly values the extension of their contract to three more machines with the German firm Enercon, globally known for its manufacture of wind turbines and for the rigorous quality requirements of the parts it assembles. In 2008 Bost received an order for three VTL 53 C vertical turning and milling units, designed for machining large-sized wind turbine parts. The order was subsequently increased to five machines, but after the supply of the first three units in 2008 it has been extended yet again to a further three units. The schedule for constructing the eight machines will be throughout this year and during the first quarter of 2011. The VTL C machines for Enercon will have tables for rotating parts of up to 5300 mm and with a weight of 100 tons, which may be turned on the lathe with a power of 142 kW and milled with two 52 kW heads, in addition to the drilling and grinding work, where high precision is assured as all the processes are performed during a single part clamping process.

As part of their innovation activity, the Bost technicians have incorporated the new technical features already applied to their vertical lathes to their second-generation boring machines. The first order for this family of machines was received from the Tolosa-based company Cadinox, which purchased a VTL-40C vertical lathe from the firm 18 months ago. The Bostram 160HS will be 15 metres in length and will have a vertical dimension of 4.5 metres and a transversal dimension of 2 metres. It will also include two tables of 3.5 x 3.5 metres and 2.5 x 2.5 metres for working with parts of 80 and 40 tons respectively. Delivery is set for late 2010.
